What is the 911 anyway? Golf is supposed to be relaxing, enjoyed with friends, and just be happy that we are out on the course. If I wanted to work out, I’d be in the gym. Sound familiar to anyone?
Here’s the skinny, and if you aren’t ready to be punched in the face with the facts, you better be sitting down.
The prevalence of general injuries in golf was estimated to be 27.1%, and it tended to be higher in women (32.0%) than men (24.5%). Injuries were predominantly higher in the upper extremities (42.4%), spine (39.7%), and lower extremities (17.9%). The recovery period of injured golfers was less than 1 month in 37.8% and less than 6 months in 69.5%. Technical errors accounted for 53.9% of injuries, followed by overuse (30.8%) and overuse (14.1%) of the trunk during the swing (Thériault et al., 1996)
Based on the NHSR’s results, it is even safer to train combative sports (rate of 1.2 per 1,000 persons) and engage in snow sport (rate of 1.1 per 1,000 persons) than to play golf, tennis, badminton and other racket sports as well as bowling, fishing, hiking and other leisure sports. So, the reason that we prepare our bodies for a sport like golf is because of the sheer number of injuries that can occur and do occur. As golf increases in popularity post COVID lockdown, expect more golfers who do not train their bodies to see more injuries, which will bring this number up. Do the right thing, take care of your bodies for a sport like golf, or simply quit playing. Your medical bills will thank you.
