7-Wood on Your Mind? Advice Blog #32

7-Wood

The 7-Wood in a bag is like a unicorn. You’ve heard it exists, yet you rarely see one. So, what is it about the 7-Wood that makes it worthy to take another club out of the bag? Let me give you the skinny.

Let’s cover the basics of what a 7-wood is first and foremost.

  • Average Loft: 21º-24º
  • Average Length: 40-42 inches
  • Average Backspin: 4,693 rpm
  • Average Distance: Men 170-200 yards & Women 160-190 yards
  • Average Swing Speed: 85 mph
  • Average Ball Speed: 123 mph

So, what will it replace? If you have a difficult time getting a 3 or 4 hybrid into the air, then this is for you. There is a give and take to this though. A smooth swing with the 7-wood will balloon the ball right into the air with no issue getting the ball airborne. The downside is that out of the rough, you better have a hybrid or stay out of the rough all together. Good news though, the 7-wood should be more accurate. If you can tell by the spin, when the ball lands, you can expect one to two bounces and that is it. The descent angle will ensure this ball sticks to the greens.

Who would need a 7-wood?

  • If you have a slow swing speed
  • If you feel a hybrid is too heavy
  • If you want a safer option off the fairway than a hybrid
  • If you just want another club with a headcover
